Heads up for Rain and What This Means for Your Pool

If you've lived in North Texas for more than a week, you know how fast the weather can flip. One minute it's blue skies and BBQ, the next minute it's pouring like you're on a movie set. And while that rain might cool things off, it’s doing a number on your pool.

Rainwater throws off your pool’s chemical balance almost instantly. It lowers chlorine levels, dilutes your carefully measured chemicals, and introduces fresh contaminants like pollen, dirt, debris, and even algae spores.

This is what we call the Rain–Shock Cycle — and understanding it is key to keeping your pool swim-ready, especially during stormy months.

So What Happens to Your Pool When It Rains?

Contaminants flood in – Rain washes organic material from nearby trees, roofs, and yards directly into your water.

Chlorine levels plummet – The added water dilutes chlorine, which means it can’t do its job.

pH gets weird – Rainwater is naturally acidic, which means it throws your water balance off and stresses out your pool system.

Algae sees a window – And when your chlorine level drops, algae throws a party.

So What Do You Do About It?

Shock your pool. It’s the fastest and most effective way to kill off bacteria, stop algae in its tracks, and reset your chemical balance before things get gross.

We usually recommend shocking right after a heavy rain or anytime you notice cloudiness or a funky smell. And yes, even if your water looks clear now — rain could still be stirring up trouble behind the scenes.
